Welcome to Week 17!

Holiday spirit is in the air at NES! More and more Christmas trees are popping up around the campus to help everyone feel festive. Check out all the amazing happenings this week and beyond!

Gifted Education Week

The Florida Department of Education has announced December 5-9, 2022 as Gifted Education Week in Florida. This week is a time to recognize and celebrate Florida’s commitment to providing outstanding educational experiences for students who are identified as gifted.

We encourage families to check out the North Elementary School Gifted Portal at https://sites.google.com/okee.k12.fl.us/nes-gifted-education/home  to learn more about the program at our school.

Florida State Assessment Progress Monitoring Round 2

STAR Early Literacy, STAR (K-2), and FAST (3-5) assessments are scheduled to start on Monday, December 5. All students will be participating in these assessments on their scheduled days during the month of December. Parent letters with details about this assessment were sent home this week.

Science Fair Workshop

5th grade families are invited to join us for a Science Fair workshop on Monday, December 5 from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM. The workshop will take place in the Media Center. All prep work to include experiments should be completed by this time, but students can come and print materials, get help with organizing their boards, and put together their boards.

All boards are due on Friday, December 9.

NES Science Fair is taking place on Thursday, December 15 from 5-6 PM.

Spirit Days in December

Fridays are Spirit Days at NES. To make things more fun, let’s show our holiday spirit this month! Check out our holiday themes and plan your outfits! Classes with the most spirit on Fridays will receive popsicles. Thank you Student Council for coming up with this year's spirit themes!

Holiday Food Drive

This is the final week for the Food for Families food drive between now and December 9. Mrs. Gonzalez’ first grade class had the most donations by November 18 and they enjoyed snow cones as a reward. Classroom with the most donations by December 9 will win a donut part. Thank you Mrs. Stefanie Love and Student Council for overseeing this initiative!

Christmas Parade

There is still time to sign up to walk with us in the city Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 10. Our theme this year is Tigers in Tinsel. Participants should wear a NES T-shirt or blue with lots of tinsel and lights. There is no student drop off - a parent/guardian must walk with their child.

Please sign up to walk with us by completing the Tigers in Tinsel Parade survey. Lineup information will be sent to everyone who has signed up by Friday, December 9.

Jingle Gram Fundraiser

4th grade is running another fundraiser to support their St. Augustine field trip. Jingle Grams are available for purchase at school until December 16. Order forms were sent home with students this week. All Jingle Grams will be delivered to students on December 22.

Fall Tutoring Ends

The last day for Fall Tutoring is Thursday, December 15. New permissions slips will be sent home with eligible students at the conclusion of the first round of tutoring. There is no tutoring the last week of school in December.

Heiken Vision Program

The Okeechobee County Health Department has partnered with a program called Heiken to provide free eye exams and glasses to eligible students. They will provide a mobile on site service if at last 30 eligible students sign up. The application is online and can be accessed here: https://mobile.floridaheiken.org/

This program is for ANY student pre-k through 12th grade.
